Word-of-the-Day

Postby Kamu » Wed Sep 16, 2009 3:32 pm

Fairly self explanatory....... :)

I love Words-of-the-Day, (Word-of-the-Days? Words-of-the-Days? Whatever.)
I thought it might be fun to see if we could get a mass of them starting here. It might be a good thread to carry over to the November Forums too. Are you in? Just pick up a dictionary, open randomly and peruse until you find an interesting word.... or add something you've read in a book recently, or heard somewhere....

I'll start.........

Nacre - Mother of Pearl from any shelled mollusc. Adjective: Nacreous.

Not a real word, but I thought I'd share this tweet:

@johnlaceyToday's fabulously made up word (via Radio National's The Spirit of Things): "Christotainment."

I was just listening to that program (not sure if it was a repeat, or a continuation of what this was in reference to). Variations on the neologism include Christotainer, Christotain, Christotaining.... etc etc.

It's the name of a book about Christianity in various forms of popular culture, and the program was a fascinating conversation with the book's author. I was most amused by the series of talking Biblical action figures, Moses being described as creepy and disturbing, likened to lurch from The Addams family. :)

Nourish - 1. sustain with food. 2. Enrich. Promote the development of.

So, not a novel word by any strength, but I really like this word anyway. I think it's one of those words that almost sounds like its meaning, or that could be just me.... :?
